Like It/Don’t Like It

Imagining myself as an assistant curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to create a digital art exhibit, I would put objects that I like and do not like to represent and show who I am.
One of my favorite objects I like and I would have up is, "Evening Dress" by Jean Dessès, this dress appeals to me because I love the pattern and color and it seems like it would complement me. Next, "1779 Doll" by Lucille Manguin, the reason why I like this doll is because it reminds me of the first doll I ever had. Thirdly, "Netsuke of Seated Puppy with Short Curled Tail" by Norizane, I love this sculpture of a puppy because dogs are my favorite animals, and this dog looked similar to the puppy I once had while I was growing up. Then, "May" by House of Dior (Christian Dior), I like this dress because it is very similar to the dress I wore for my best friend’s sweetsixteen. After that, "Cocktail Shoes" By Frattegiani, I find these shoes interesting and unique since it is in a form and shape of a heart. Last but least of one of my favorite is, "Miniature Broad Collar" by Macedonian, I like this necklace because it is unique and I would like to add it to my jewelry collection.
Now that I’ve stated my likes, these are my dislikes. "Album of Drawings" by Filippo Juvarra, I do not like this drawing because it has no color and really does not say much. Second, "The Oriel Window, South Gallery, Lacock Abbey" by William Henry Fox Talbot, I dislike this painting because i don't like the colors and patterns. Third, "Sadness, from Le Brun Travested [sic], Or Caricatures of the Passions" by Thomas Rowlandson, this painting does not appeal to me because the two people in the painting appear to be sad and that makes me feel sad as well. Fourth, "The First Onoe Kikugoro as an Angry Man" by Katsukawa Shunshô, I do not like this drawing because the man appears to be angry and looks to be ready to fight. Fifth, "Body Mask (Det)" by an Asmat artist, the reason why I don't like this is because it looks creepy and gives me goosebumps when I look at it. The artwork I extremely dislike is, "Saint Zenobius Resuscitating a Dead Child" by Benozzo Gozzoli, I do not like this painting because it is a painting of a dead child, and I believe children should not die because they still have their whole life ahead of them to live, therefore it makes me feel sad.

Field Trip #5

One of my favorite artwork that I found around my neighborhood is "Suddenly
Laughter (Reflection within a Zen rock garden)" by the artist Arlan Huang.
Judging from this piece and the title, it seems that Huang is trying to
communicate to the viewer that many different color and and random shapes can
put a smile on people's faces. I find this artwork to be a benefit rather than a
detriment to its surrounding area. I personally find it beneficial because this
artwork is place in a hospital, and by looking at it can make people happy
because it looks quite fun to look at, and since most people in hospitals seem
and appear to be upset. My perception of this piece would not change if it were
place in like a public location or a private space. I would also actually like
to have this hanging in the celling of my room, I think I would go great in my
room.

Field Trip #4: LES Galleries Reaction

The galleries in the Lower East Side had many differences and similarity to the galleries in Chelsea. One of the differences I notice was the setting. The galleries on the Lower East Side are located in a more affordable neighborhood, and the people in the community are more diverse. The Galleries in Chelsea are located in a more higher and modern neighborhood, and is not as diverse as the Lower East Side. One commonality the galleries have in both locations have is the art, I personally did not see any difference in the art work they seem similar to me. Therefore I do believe that they do cater to the same type of collectors. Another difference other than the setting, was that the galleries on the Lower East Side were mostly close because they were under construction. That being said, the surrounding area of the galleries on the Lower East Side and in Chelsea does not affect how I view the art work. I treat all art like art, not according to their setting. One of the many galleries I saw in Chelsea and that happen to be my favorites are Orchard Windows, located in 37 Orchard St. Second, Untitled, located in 30 Orchard St. Lastly, Lesley Heller Workspace located in, 54th Orchard St.

Project #3: Illustrate a Story

What I found very interesting was that he witness many atomic bombs that went off when he was only 17 years old. I also found interesting that he described what he witness as hell, if hell is on earth. I choose to illustrate the setting in a war zone and bombs going off in the background.

Field Trip 5: Chelsea Galleries Reaction

If I were to be an art collector I would collect art work that catch my eye. One artist work of art I would like to collect is "Traffic Under the George Washington Bridge" the artist is not mention. The reason why I would love to collect this art work is because its a painting of the George Washington Bridge. When I first saw the painting I thought I was looking at a real photograph of the George Washington, because the painting is so realistic, that it caught my eye. I would love to put up this painting in my living room or dinning room, because the colors of the painting matches my living room and dinning room color scheme. This also caught my eyes because I live really close to the George Washington Bridge, and I knew the first second I saw it that it was a painting of the George Washington Bridge without even looking at the information at the front desk. Since its a painting of a scenery and its very realistic and precise, in my opinion this art work is a really good investment.

But, I would not like to collect the art work "TX Badlands" by the artist Greg Haberny. One of the many reasons I would not collect this art work is because it looks like a bunch of trash, garbage, and debris just shaped and mold into the shape of the state Texas. The background is also kinda of messy and dirty looking. I  believe this art work is not a good investment, because the pieces may start to fall apart slowly over time. I would not like to display objects that look messy since Im a neat freak. I also do not like to keep unnecessary useless objects in storage. Therefore I would not like to display or even keep this art work in storage.

Design in Our Lives

On this assignment we had to choose two high functionally and two low functionally works of art. High functionally means a work of art that can be use full for our everyday life and can be an essential tool or object. Low functionally meaning a work of art that can't be uses full for everyday and/or the object has no point as to why it was created.
For high functionally I choses "Analog Digital" by Maarten Baas. I choose this as high functionally because it's a digital clock, which is every useful. It's fast and quick to check the time with a digital clock rather a than watches, with watches you have to analyze the time, and sometimes you dont get he time exactly correct. Another high functionally work of art I also chose was "Emigre 49, The Everything Is For Sale Issue" by Emigre Inc, Rudy VanderLans, and Zuzana Licko. I also chose as a high functionally because its image of a shopping cart. Shopping carts are very important to shoppers mostly because its more comfortable and the shoppers wont have to hassel. I believe shopping carts are an essential tool for consumer, therefor its a high functionally work of art.
As for low functionally I choose the works "Miller" by Matthew Carter and "Gotham" by Jonathan Hoefler. To me me these two works are low functionally because they are just text. It's just word that says Miller and Gotham. It's not even sentence at least, nor does not illustrates anything. I personally dont find these words uses use, therefor in my opinion I believe it is low functionally work of art.
I've notice that the works of art I used for low functionally objects have something in common. These thing they have in common is that they are both are just text, printed in black bold letters. I believe that just one plain word shouldn't necessarily be consider a work of art.
